Adopt a Horse

Adoption services are a pillar of what we do here at the Humane Society of Ventura County. Our shelter is lucky enough to have a dedicated facility where we can house, care for, and adopt our equine animals. From horses to mules, we strive to find every furry friend the loving home they deserve.

Horses at the shelter are viewable by appointment only. If you are interested in expanding your equine family, please contact our Equine Manager, Christina Malleck, at 805-364-1150 or via email at [email protected]. Horse adoption fees vary based on the horse's profile. If you are interested in a specific horse, please inquire about their adoption fee.

Those interested can learn more about each of our adoptable horses by viewing their MyRightHorse profiles.

Adoption Interest Questionnaire

The horse adoption process:

You've fallen in love with your dream equine, now what? Here are the next steps in the adoption process:

  1. Fill out the adoption interest questionnaire (linked above).
  2. Once submitted, our Equine Manager, Christina Malleck, will contact you to offer more information about the horse you are interested in.
  3. Make an appointment to come to the shelter and meet the horse. During this time you will be able to interact with the horse directly under the guidance of our Equine Manager.
  4. Review and sign our horse adoption contract.
  5. Schedule a corral inspection to ensure your space is suitable for the horse. This will be done regardless of whether you board your horse or own your property. If you live out of county, this may be done virtually on a case-by-case basis.
  6. Once passing the corral inspection, you can schedule an adoption for your new equine family member. Adoptions are only performed at the shelter in the morning.
  7. Arrange transport for your horse. You may transport yourself, use a private hauler, or transport via HSVC for an extra fee.
  8. Bring your new horse home!

Owner surrendered horses:

At the HSVC, we know life can be unpredictable. If you find yourself falling into financial difficulties or unforeseen life changes, our shelter offers accepts horses surrendered by their owners for a $200 surrender fee. Proof of ownership is required and the animal must pass an intake evaluation. Please let the shelter know if you are in need of financial assistance when surrendering your horse.
